In Memorium

Jay Folger, Past President of the Madison Art Society January 10, 2008

Unfortunately, I am the bearer of sad news concerning the passing of our Past President of the MAS, Jay Folger, last evening at Branford CT Hospice. In speaking with his wife, BJ, she said that Jay had a wonderful opportunity to enjoy his family at home around a roaring fire over Christmas. An Obituary will be in Sunday's paper announcing the calling hours at the Swan Funeral Home in Madison, Ct on Tuesday from 4 -7 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be sent to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd, Homeport Cove, Branford, CT 06405 or to Yale Cancer Research. A private ceremony for Jay will be held for the family this summer.

I spoke with BJ and Don Trownsell. We would like to dedicate the 33rd Annual Member Show to Jay this February. We plan to hang one of his paintings at the show and to incorporate an image of one of his paintings on the cover of our program. I have attached a photo I took of Jay at his beloved Leete's Island late this fall. His dedication to building MAS to what it is today will be remembered by all of our members. ~ Bev Schirmeier

When Earths Last Picture is Painted

When Earth's last picture is painted
And the tubes are twisted and dried
When the oldest colors have faded
And the youngest critic has died
We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it
Lie down for an aeon or two
'Till the Master of all good workmen
Shall put us to work anew
And those that were good shall be happy
They'll sit in a golden chair
They'll splash at a ten league canvas
With brushes of comet's hair
They'll find real saints to draw from Magdalene, Peter, and Paul
They'll work for an age at a sitting
And never be tired at all.
And only the Master shall praise us.
And only the Master shall blame.
And no one will work for the money.
No one will work for the fame.
But each for the joy of the working,
And each, in his separate star,
Will draw the thing as he sees it.
For the God of things as they are!

Rudyard Kipling
