2007 Juried Show

It’s Time for the MAS Juried Show

We’re pleased to announce our 32nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition for Connecticut Artists. Receiving this year will be on Saturday April 28th from 9:00am-12noon in the Community Room of the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library. MAS members will be receiving a prospectus in the mail. We hope that MAS members will enter their best work so that we can mount a show of outstanding quality and variety. We’re pleased to have as our jurors this year Burgess Russell who specializes in portraiture, and has been a prize recipient in the National Portrait Show run by John Howard Sanden in New York City. Russell holds a degree in Fine Art from the University of Colorado and has completed additional studies at the Silvermine School, the Lyme Academy and with Burton Silverman and Nelson Shanks. Our second juror is Shauna Shane. Ms. Shane works in both watercolor and oil. She has studied at the Lyme Academy, UConn, the Banff School of Fine Art in Alberta, Canada. She has also studied with Clyde Aspevig and Raymond Everett Kinsler. Her exhibit history includes the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Oil Painters of America show and the Knickerbocker exhibit. Shauna Shane will also be doing a Watercolor demonstration on Thursday April 5th. This is a Lunch and Learn day in the Scranton Library community room. The demonstration begins at 12:15 and continues through 3:00pm. Bring your lunch.

The Opening Reception for the Show will be Friday evening May 4th from 6:00-8 00pm. Members, friends and guests are welcome to attend. Please invite your friends and neighbors. Over $1000 in prizes will be awarded.

Please note that your MAS dues for 2007 MUST be paid before receiving day. No dues will be accepted at receiving. If your dues have lapsed you will have to pay the higher non-member entry fee. If you have any questions regarding your dues or to check to see if you have already paid for 2007 please contact Membership Chair, Maude Schmidt 203-245-0807, Vice President Bev Schirmeier 860-399-6116 or Board Member Jan Blencowe 860-669-3582.

Those works not selected should be picked up between May 1st and Mat 4th during regular library hours. This is VERY IMPORTANT. The room used to store the works has been reserved by another group after May 4th so all paintings must be removed in a timely fashion. Your cooperation in this is greatly appreciated.

Accepted works must remain in the show until May 31st and picked up on Friday June 1st 3:00-5:30pm or Saturday June 2nd 9:00am-12noon.

Further details for the show including entry requirements, acceptable media and sizes can be found in the prospectus.

The juried show is our biggest event of the year and takes the efforts of a team of people to be successful. We are asking for volunteers to help in a variety of areas including Receiving call Bev Schirmeir 860-399-6116, Reception call Jan Blencowe 860-669-3582, Hanging call Pat Seekamp 203-453-6720. If you would like to volunteer to chair a show several opportunities still exist this year and of course we will need chairpersons for the Members Show and the Juried Show next year. Board Members are happy to assist first time chairpersons in their task and procedural manuals are available that give specific instructions and resources for what needs to be done to make the show a success.

Please to sign up to bring food to the reception and hang posters in local stores. We are also looking for members to gallery sit. This has become a very important part of our effort to make the community more aware of our shows and the wonderful artwork that is available for sale through our exhibits. Sitters interact with guests who come to view the show, welcoming them and thanking them for taking the time to stop in. There is also a recordkeeping form which sitters fill out during their assigned time. This allows us to track how many people come through the show, what kinds of questions they ask, track sales etc. Two hours is all we ask of each member and you can choose which day and time suits your schedule best. Please make every effort to sign up to gallery sit. Sign up sheets will be available at receiving.

The MAS Juried Show has traditionally opened the summer art show season along the Shoreline with numerous other art societies annual juried shows following throughout the spring, summer and fall. Let’s work together to make the 2007 MAS show the best ever!
