again, off-again love affair that he vowed to do something about when he retired". 15 years ago he began taking art classes at the Guilford Art Center and has continued painting over the last several years with a Madison watercolor group under the tutelage of Joan McPherson. " Something kept driving me to action paintings of racing horses, sailboats in rough water and ballet dancers.  Trying to integrate bold colors and dramatic light into semi-impressionistic images of these subjects has been my greatest challenge.  It has been a bumpy road".

Joan Handschumacher
Beginning most of her paintings on location and finishing in her studio, Joan finds inspiration along the shoreline and from her travels both on the road and at sea.  She is a lifelong, avid photographer and paints in watercolor, oil, pastel, gouache and oil

pastel.  As leader of the CT Shoreline Artists, Joan and her fellow painters work outside in different locations, weekly, from mid March until mid December.  She is a member of the Madison Art Society, Guilford Art League, Clinton Art Society, Lyme Art Association and Essex Art Association.  She believes "if you love the creative process and want to grow your painting skills, it's important to dedicate time to paint.  Having a regular schedule to paint with others and trying to have new paintings ready for each of the regional shows keeps me producing and learning.  Could retirement get any better than this?!"
