Madison Art Society to present Jan Blencowe "Keeping a Nature Journal"

The Madison Art Society will host a presentation entitled "Keeping a Nature Journal" by artist Jan Blencowe on June 8, 6:30 p.m. at the Madison Senior Center, 29 Bradley Road, Madison, CT.

Keeping a nature journal creates a treasure trove of ideas and inspiration. Learn to develop sketching skills that will inform your plein air and studio paintings, filling them with authenticity and life. Jan will have plenty of her own nature journals on hand, suggestions for how to get started, ideas for documenting and learning about the plants and animals you encounter, and methods for quick, “sketching on the spot” techniques in a variety of media.

Jan Blencowe is a Connecticut landscape painter and keen observer of the natural world. She keeps a nature journal and explores and documents her life through visual and illustrated mixed media journals. She is a member of the American Society of Naturalists and a licensed JourneyCircles™ facilitator. Her sketchbook, Winter in Connecticut, is part of the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library in New York.

The public is welcome and the presentation is free.

The Guilford Poets Guild and the Madison Art Society to present Poetry Night

On Wednesday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. the Madison Art Society and the Guilford Poets Guild will present a very special event.  Poetry Night, is an evening on which the poets read aloud poems inspired by the artwork displayed at Madison Art Society's 42nd Annual Juried Show.  The poems, sometimes funny, other times poignant or emotional are read with flair and drama by the poets.

The art that inspired the poem is displayed during the reading.  The event is enjoyed by the artists and poets alike and is open to the public.  Artists whose work is selected as the subject of a poem have likened having their work chosen to winning a prize.

80 works of art in all fine art media are on exhibit in the community room of the library.  Awards were announced at the opening reception on May 11, 2017.  The Best in Show award, donated by Davis Realty went to Joe Roberti for his stunning colored pencil on embossed paper, "February".

Winner of Best in Show Joe Roberti,
presented by MAS member Nancy Armstrong
$3045 in awards were given to 17 Connecticut artists.  The Madison Art Society is grateful to the local businesses and donors for their support of the arts along the shoreline.
